High-Quality Shingles on This New Roof in New Hartford, Connecticut

The shingles on this customer's roof were dated, stained, and had moss and lichen growth. The Brown Roofing team was able to solve all of these problems with a roof replacement. Absolutely stunning transformation on these residential condos in Bristol, CT

This has to be one of our largest jobs yet, there were many buildings that we had to work on. Every one of these roofs had severe algae growth and color fade. It is one of the worst cases that we have ever seen. It. Was. Horrible. Even though the roofs were in complete sunlight for the majority of the day there was still growth. We also replaced and installed gutters on many of the other buildings along with skylights. We ripped up the old roof, replaced the decking layer, laid down Ice and Water, and an underlayment. Next, we installed the shingles and the property owners decided on Fox Hollow Gray, which matched the siding perfectly. Now that they have a brand new roof they can be confident that all their tenants are safe and dry.

Brand new roof on this home in Bristol, CT

This home in Bristol was suffering from algae growth and color fade. The algae growth could be attributed to a few factors, but the color fade is due to old age. The first option is that the home is under thick tree coverage and it is damp and shady, which does not seem to be the case here. Two, the shingle’s anti-algae protective layer has worn off over time. This is a very possible contender. Finally, algae can grow if there is a leak in the roof because the saturated materials create a great environment for the algae to grow. This was not a problem on this roof because when we inspected the decking layer there was no sign of rot or mold. So it has to be option two, This roof was fairly old and it is extremely common for this to happen to older roofs, this is also explained by the color fade.

How do we fix it? First, we start by removing the existing shingles and inspecting the decking layer below and if it is in perfect condition we can reuse it. This saves the customer money and reduces waste. Next, we laid down decking tape over all the gaps, and six feet of Sealeron Ice and Water around any eaves, rake edges, overhangs, and valleys. Finally, we install a synthetic underlayment over any uncovered surface making sure to overlap the materials.

Now we can install the new shingles and flashings, this customer decided on our IKO Dynasty Summit Gray Shingles. When installing shingles we always start at the bottommost edge and work our way up to ensure that they are layered properly and that they direct the water away from the roof. The flashings are installed anywhere there is an opening in the roof like vents and chimneys, they are also installed anywhere the shingels touch the siding.

Now that this brand new roof is installed and the homeowner couldn’t be happier with the result, you may be asking yourself. Well in 10, 20,30 or so years won’t this happen again? Actually, no our IKO Dynasty Singles and the rest of the roofing system are guaranteed to last for 50 years and are under warranty for 50 years! The next best roofing system will last at most 25-30 years.
