When we originally striped this roof of its shingles and we noticed that the plywood underneath was badly damaged. After we removed the plywood the cause of the problem became apparent. The previous contractor installed the insulation right under the plywood which caused it to rot. We re-installed the plywood properly and then covered in with all new plywood!
Roof Replacement in South Britain
This commercial job was done in Southbury, CT on and old folks home, this roof had lots of leaks so we hade to replace a lot of stuff that we normally would not have to replace, this job was also on a huge job you cant walk all the material up so we had to get a crane to come in and load up all the material!
When we arrived at the Willis' home, we immediately noticed heavy moss coverage all around the house on the siding, and even some on the roof. The moss and algae had stripped away the UV protective layer, causing the color to fade on both the siding and roof. The absence of this layer also accelerated the aging process and could potentially lead to issues with the house in the near future. Additionally, we observed that the gutters were in poor condition and needed replacement.
After our team inspected the house, we provided the customer with a quote to replace the roof, siding, and gutters. Upon receiving approval from Mr. Willis, we began the work by focusing on the roof. Once we removed the old shingles, we assessed the decking layer and found it to be in decent shape, requiring only a few sheets to be replaced. This resulted in cost savings for Mr. Willis. Following the installation of the decking layer, we applied ice and water protection, along with an underlayment to serve as an additional weather barrier. Finally, we installed the chosen IKO Dynasty Granite Black Shingles, along with flashings.
Next on the agenda was the gutter replacement. The existing gutters were inadequate in diverting water away from the house and were prone to frequent clogging. We replaced them with our Gutter Shutter White Gutters. Finally, we fully replaced the old shake siding with Cider Peaks Sea Slate Blue Siding.
After just two days, the entire house underwent a remarkable transformation, shifting from a moss-covered and aged appearance to a bright, new, and stunning one. With the new roof, gutters, and siding in place, the Willis family can be confident in their home's protection against whatever challenges Mother Nature may present.
When our team arrived at the Muniz family home we instantly saw the damages and they were extreme. We could already see multiple things from the street and we knew that this roof was in rough shape without even getting on the roof. This roof definitely needed a closer inspection so we got up there, we saw an insane amount of rot and lichen. From the street, the original color of the singles looked to be light gray but it was actually a darker shade. The reason it was so light was because all of the shingles were covered in lichen.
Once we worked out the details with the family we got to work tearing up the old roof and decking layer. Demo on the roof went quickly because of the rotten shingles, when it was time to replace the decking layer it was a little more challenging because the original roof used a wood shake style decking layer and this was outdated and rotted. This definitely needed to be replaced. The new decking layer that we put down was of plywood and this was a lot more watertight and resistant than the wood shake design which had large gaps between each piece of wood.
Now that all the damaged pieces were either removed or replaced we were ready to start putting down new material. We started by taping all the seams in between the sheets of plywood. Next, we lay down Ice and Water along all the edges and valleys. This helps seal the roof even more in areas water likes to sit or in high-flow areas. Next is the underlayment, which is laid over the rest of the roof that's not covered by the Ice and Water, and these two layers overlay some.
With all the underlayers done, we can start working on laying the shingles down. The Muniz’s wanted to go with our IKO Dynasty IR Glacier Shingles. These shingles were a perfect match to the rest of the house and a definite upgrade to the old roof.
Within one short day, we were able to tear down the original roof and decking layer and replace them with quality materials, and unmatched craftsmanship. Their brand-new roof comes with a 50-year warranty, ensuring they will have a beautiful, safe, and dry roof for a very long time.
This home was in good condition for its age and there were no major problems with the roof, on the surface that is. This customer contacted us asking for a quote because they knew their roof was nearing the end of its life cycle and wanted to see what it would cost them. When Geoffrey one of the members of our team, went out to survey the home and give a quote he noticed that there was water damage below the shingles but that there were no signs of this on the exterior of the home.
This was strange but not unheard of and it was most likely due to the location of the home. When water gets under the shingles and sits for a while it creates a perfect environment for algae, moss, and lichen to grow. The two major conditions that these need to grow are water and shade. So there is water but since the home was in direct sunlight for about eighty percent of the day the plant growth could not take hold. This was good and bad in a few ways. It was good because less damage was caused, but if this was not caught early there could have been some serious damage done to the home. The plant growth is a blessing in disguise because it usually alerts the homeowner that there is something wrong with the roof.
So what did we do to fix it, we first started by ripping up all the old shingles in order to properly assess the damage. Once we got a good look at the decking layer below we were certain that the leak in the roof was only caused by old age and not damaged shingles.
The next step was to repair the damages and to do this we replaced all the rotting sheets of plywood and replaced them with brand new sheets. Once this was done we moved on to installing decking tape, Sealeron Ice and Water, and a synthetic underlayment. These three materials act as an extra layer of protection for the roof and in the event of a shingle puncture, this layer will help seal the roof until the damage can be remedied.
Finally, we can install the shingles and this customer decided on our IKO Dynasty Frostone Gray Shingles, which matched perfectly with their siding and black shutters. When installing shingles we start from the bottom edge and work our way up. As we work our way up we install flashings around all the openings in the roof like vents and chimneys, we also install them anywhere shingles meet siding. Within the day this homeowner had a brand new beautiful roof that will last a lifetime and is under warranty for 50 years!
This school in Bethany called us out due to leaks and water stains on the roof. There was also an extreme amount of algae, lichen, and color fade. There were also a few repair patches that were extremely questionable, these patches looked as if shingles were just laid on top of the leak. There were nails exposed which means water would still be able to seep through the nail hole. On top of this, there were many rolled and damaged shingles, and nail pops were frequent on this roof. All of these issues were primarily caused by old age and poor craftsmanship. Anyone can have the best materials in the world but if they are not installed properly they are useless.
The first step to this replacement was ripping up all the damaged shingles and inspecting the decking layer below. Due to the damage to the shingle, a significant amount of moisture was able to seep through to the decking layer causing it to rot warranting us to replace almost every sheet.
After this was done we moved on to the sealing layer, which consists of three materials that work together to create a waterproof yet breathable layer. Strip tape is the first to go down and this is applied to all the seams and edges. Next is our Sealeron Ice and Water, which is laid down on the edges of the roof, along any walls and edges. Lastly, we installed our synthetic underlayment over any uncovered surface. These three layers not only stop moisture from penetrating the wood decking layer but also act as a second layer of insulation for the house creating a more energy-efficient environment.
Lastly, we install the shingles and flashings, we install flashings around any openings in the roof like chimneys, skylights, and certain vents. After this we start on the shingles, when installing shingles we always start on the bottom-most corner and work our way up and across the roof ensuring that the shingles are layered properly. Once we reach the top of the roof we install our ridge vent and ridge cap shingles, both of which are hand-nailed to ensure that they are not over-compressed.
Our day was not over yet, even though the roof was done we still had cleanup to do. We started by picking up the obvious large pieces and then moved on to sweeping the entire workspace with a magnetic broom to pick up any nails or debris. Once the customer approved the clean-up and roof our day was over.
This home’s roof was suffering from algae growth along with lichen. Although this roof had minimal damage and was in relatively good condition this homeowner made the right decision to replace their roof as it was close to 25 years old. With the technology and practices used when this roof was built, it is fair to say that this roof was nearing the end of its life. Preventative maintenance like this could save you anywhere from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, especially when dealing with your home.
The first step to any roof replacement is to remove the existing layer of shingles and further inspect the decking layer below. The decking layer in this home was in surprisingly good condition and we were able to reuse it and save the customer money.
Next, we retaped the decking layer with our own Sealeron Deck Tape. This tape seals all the seams that are created from the plywood along with any other seams like rake and drip metal to plywood. After that, we lay down our Sealeron Ice and Water over all the eaves, rake edges, overhangs, and valleys. We also wrap the Ice and Water down behind the gutters to ensure that no wind-driven rain gets underneath the shingles. Lastly, we lay down a synthetic underlayment over any remaining uncovered areas. The combination of these three materials creates and watertight yet breathable layer.
Finally, we can install the shingles and this customer decided on our IKO Dynasty Shadow Brown Shingles. When installing shingles it is important to always start at the bottommost corner of the roof to ensure that they are layered properly. As we make our way up the roof we install flashings around any openings like chimneys and vents and depending on the opening we use different materials. For example, for a chimney flashing we use copper or lead flashings but for a Perma-Boot, we use our Ice and Water.
With the roof finished and sealed, this customer now has a new, secure roof that promises safety for the next 50 years, ensuring lasting peace of mind.

Cheshire homeowner Jason contacted Brown Roofing knowing his roof was nearing the end of its life. While there were no active leaks, he had noticed signs of wear and wanted to be proactive in protecting his home before any real issues developed.
Inspector Austin visited the property and conducted a full inspection. He noted signs of moisture damage beneath the shingles, as well as general wear from age and exposure to the elements. Though the roof was still holding up, Austin recommended a full replacement to prevent future leaks and structural issues. This is a smart move that could save Jason significant time and cost down the road.
After discussing Brown Roofing’s process, premium materials, and industry-leading 50-year warranty, Jason felt confident moving forward with the project.
Project Manager Austin and his experienced crew took the lead. They began by carefully removing the existing shingles and underlayment, exposing the plywood decking beneath. Each section of sheathing was closely inspected, and any areas with rot or damage were replaced with brand-new half-inch CDX plywood, ensuring a strong and stable base for the new roof system.
To meet Connecticut’s building codes and provide excellent water protection, the team installed six feet of leak barrier (ice and water shield) along the eaves, as well as in valleys and around all roof penetrations. They applied deck seam tape to all plywood joints to create a fully sealed surface and added Velora One synthetic underlayment across the remainder of the roof for enhanced weather resistance and durability.
With the underlayment complete, it was time for the final layer: IKO Dynasty architectural shingles in Shadow Brown, a rich, earthy tone that complements Jason’s home while delivering high-performance weather protection. These shingles feature ArmourZone technology, offering exceptional fastening strength and wind resistance up to 130 mph.
To ensure proper ventilation and prolong the roof’s lifespan, a continuous ridge vent was installed at the peak, and all flashings, including around pipe boots and other penetrations, were carefully sealed and replaced as needed.
Now, Jason’s Cheshire home is not only equipped with a beautiful new roof but one that’s built to withstand New England’s unpredictable weather for decades to come.

Inspector Rick visited the property to conduct a thorough assessment and confirmed that the roof was due for replacement. After learning about our high-quality roofing systems and long-term warranties, Joe chose to move forward with Brown Roofing, confident in both the products and the team behind them.
Project Manager Noel and his experienced crew got to work, beginning with a full tear-off of the old roofing system. The crew carefully evaluated the condition of each plank and replaced any damaged ones with properly cut and fitted CDX plywood, ensuring a strong and stable foundation for the new roof.
Once the decking was secured, they installed six feet of ice and water shield at the eaves, taped all plywood seams to meet building code requirements, and then covered the entire surface with durable Velora One synthetic underlayment. Next, drip edge and rake metal flashing were installed along all roof edges for added protection.
For the shingles, Joe selected IKO Dynasty in the timeless shade of Shadow Brown, a choice that delivers both exceptional performance and curb appeal, backed by a 50-year warranty. Shelton homeowner Matt hadn’t been looking for a new roof until Inspector Chase from Brown Roofing reached out. Chase had identified storm damage to Matt’s roof, and with an active insurance claim already in progress, it was the perfect time to take action. After learning about our materials, process, and 50-year warranty, Matt was confident choosing Brown Roofing for the job!
Project Manager Bill and his expert crew got to work by removing the old shingles and inspecting the decking underneath. They uncovered tongue-and-groove planks: a dated style of sheathing made from individual wood boards. While common in older homes, this decking isn’t strong enough to support today’s modern roofing systems. Our team installed half-inch CDX plywood over the entire surface to create a clean, solid foundation.
Next came six feet of ice and water shield along the eaves for extra storm protection, followed by taped seams and Velora One synthetic underlayment to complete the weatherproofing layer. With that in place, the crew added new drip edge and rake metal flashing, then installed IKO Dynasty shingles in Summit Gray, one of our most popular colors for its sleek, classic finish and Impact 3-rated durability. In addition to the main roof, the crew also installed a small section of SBS modified bitumen roofing: a durable, rubberized system ideal for low-slope areas where traditional shingles aren’t suitable.
The job was finished with a ridge vent for proper attic ventilation and expertly sealed flashing. Matt now has a beautiful, high-performance roof built to handle New England weather for decades to come!

First, they stripped away the old shingles from both the main house and the shed, then inspected the plywood sheathing underneath. Any damaged or compromised boards were replaced with strong new sheets of CDX plywood to ensure a solid base.
Next came the underlayment layers: six feet of ice and water shield up from the eaves, all seams carefully taped for code compliance and extra protection, followed by Velora One synthetic underlayment across the rest of the roof. The team then installed drip edge and rake metal flashing to keep water directed away from the structure.
