Before: House

Before: Barn
In addition to the house, Richard's barn is getting a new roof as well. Not a moment too soon for these much needed makeovers. Those dark streaks and discoloration mean that roof algae is quickly deteriorating the shingles. Let's get started!

Prepping the Property
Before the crew begins the teardown, large tarps are laid across the yard and hung up around the edges of the roof to ensure that the property is fully protected as well as make for an easier cleanup process at the end.

The Teardown Begins
The crew gets to work stripping off all of the old shingles. This exposes the layer of plywood underneath, which is called the sheathing. It is the structural foundation of the roof.

The Sheathing Is Exposed
As the structural foundation of the roof, the sheathing must be in tip-top shape. The crew closely examines the entire sheathing for any damage, like rot or mold. Any parts found affected are removed and replaced.

New Underlayment Is Installed
Next, a layer of underlayment is installed over the entire sheathing. This thin, waterproof membrane protects the plywood from harsh elements like rain, wind, snow, and ice.

Drip Edge Flashing Is Installed
With the underlayment all set, the roof is almost ready for shingles-but first comes the drip edge flashing. This thin metal strip is installed along the roof's edges to help guide water straight into the gutters, keeping it from seeping under the shingles and damaging the sheathing.

Same for the Barn
The same process is followed for the barn as well: teardown, sheathing inspection and replacement where needed, underlayment, and drip edge flashing installation.

New Shingles Are Installed
The new shingles are going on now! Richard has selected the beautiful Biscayne from the IKO Dynasty collection to enhance the look of his home.

After: House
After quick final review and a few finishing touches, Richard's new roof is officially complete!

After: Barn
The barn's roof is complete as well, and Richard has selected the striking Atlantic Blue IKO Dynasty shingles to perfectly complement its red walls. What a transformation!
