Before: Aerial View
This bird's-eye view shows the extent of damage on the backside of the roof - lots of stains and moss growth indicating serious moisture damage in these shingles. Let's get that fixed!

The Teardown Begins
The crew starts off the renovation by stripping the old shingles off. This reveals the layer of wood underneath, which is called the roof sheathing.

The Sheathing Is Inspected
Years of strong weather and water damage leads to a compromised sheathing, as seen by the breakage evident in this image. This section, along with all other areas found with damage, rot, mold, or decay of any sort are removed.

Sheathing Is Replaced
Freddy's roof has what is called tongue-and-groove sheathing, otherwise known as plank decking. It is constructed from long, rectangular wooden boards laid side-by-side. While previously a very popular method of sheathing, it has since become less popular due to the tendency of planks to warp and gap over time. The crew cuts and precisely fits brand-new plywood into all of the areas that were removed.

New Plywood Is Installed
To ensure the foundation is as solid as it can possibly be for the new roof, a layer of 1/2" CDX plywood is installed over top of the old sheathing. These sturdy, water-repelling sheets of fresh wood will ensure complete protection. Each new sheet is numbered, ensuring that the crew can accurately report back to the homeowner exactly how many sheets were used.

Seams Are Taped & Underlayment Is Installed
To provide even MORE reinforcement, the seams of each new plywood sheet is taped with all-weather deck tape, and a layer of underlayment is installed over the entire surface. This is a thin, waterproof later of synthetic felt that shields the sheathing from harsh elements like wind, rain, snow, and ice.

New Shingles Are Installed
Next, it's time to start installing the brand-new shingles. These IKO Dynasty shingles are premium-laminated and architectural - meaning they are more durable, longer-lasting, and have more of a chic, modern appeal than Freddy's old three-tab shingles. Definitely an upgrade worth making!

New Flashing on the Chimney
New metal flashing is installed around the chimney where it meets the roof and is sealed with strong caulk, ensuring a watertight seal on the roof junction.

The Roof Is Complete
After a few final touches and a thorough inspection of the property to ensure all of the debris is picked up - the roof is finished!
