This top view facing the back of the house shows more of the damage on the roof, like the dark stains of algae and other shingle discoloration. Let's get to work!

The Teardown Begins
The crew kicks things off by stripping off the old shingles. This reveals the roof sheathing, which is the structural framework of the roof. Jongkolnee's house had skip sheathing: wooden boards attached with spaces between them. A common and cost-effective method of sheathing in the past, skip sheathing is not often used anymore on traditionally asphalt shingled roofs due to the lack of stability they provide.

New Sheathing Is Installed
In order to ensure the strongest foundation for the new roof, the crew installs heavyweight CDX plywood on top of the skip sheathing. Each new sheet is carefully cut and sized to perfectly fit in place, and then nailed down securely.

Seams Taped & Underlayment Applied
The crew tapes the seams of all the sturdy plywood with heavy-duty all-weather deck tape. Then, they cover the entire surface with a layer of underlayment. This is a thin, water-resistant material that shields the decking from harsh elements like rain and snow.

New Shingles Are Installed
Next, it's time to install the brand-new shingles! Our crew uses IKO Dynasty architectural shingles, known for their durability and style. These shingles come in a wide variety of colors, and Jongkolnee has selected the elegant Driftshake shade for her new roof.

Ridge Vent Is Installed

After a few final touches, like installing a shingle vent at each ridge to ensure proper air circulation in the attic, as well as securing flashing around the sides of the chimney and the roof pipes, the new roof is complete!
