Before Roof Replacement: Ground View
There are small white spots on the roof that are visible even from this ground-view photograph taken by Inspector Darwin. Those white spots are called lichen, which is an organism similar to algae that thrives on dampness and keeping areas damp. This indicates that unwanted moisture has penetrated the roof.

Roof Removal Begins
Discolored shingles and lichen growth can be seen as the crew begins the initial roof teardown.

Shingles Are Removed
The crew continues to remove the old, damaged shingles, revealing the plywood decking underneath.

Rake Board Is Removed
Project Manager Austin found that the rake board of this roof was beginning to rot off and needed to be replaced. A rake board is a horizontal board that runs along the sloping edge of a roof, providing protection from water and debris as well as structural support. A strong rake board is essential for a strong roof.

New Rake Board Is Installed
A new rake board is installed, and now the house is ready for its gutters to be reinstalled.

Plywood, Seams, and Underlayment Are Laid
After removing all of the shingles, the crew examined the plywood decking and subsequently replaced any boards that showed signs of rot, decay, or mold. Next, they taped up the seams of the plywood sheets with heavy-duty SealoronXT Deck Tape, and then proceeded to cover the entire thing with underlayment - a thin material that protects the decking from water, ice, and snow.

The Chimney Is Prepped
The chimney is prepped for flashing with Ice & Water Shield underlayment. Flashing is a thin, waterproof material that prevents water from entering vulnerable areas. It protects the building from rot and other structural damage.

Shingles Are Installed
Now that the underlayment is finished, the crew starts installing new, IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black to the roof.

The Roof Replacement Is Complete
After installing the shingles, ridge vent, and pipe boots, and putting the finishing touches on the metal chimney flashing, this roof is complete!
