Moss, algae, and Lichen
This house had an extreme amount of moss, algae and lichen covering their roof. The moss and algae pose no immediate threat to the integrity of the roof but over time if ignored the moss and algae can eat away at the UV protective layer on the shingles. The lichen on the other hand will grow roots and burrow them into the shingles creating holes for water to seep through.
IT'S DEMO TIME!
We're ripping up the old roof and getting rid of all that moss, algae, and lichen. This is one of the quickest parts to installing a new roof and arguably the most fun.
Wood shake rip
Here we are getting ready to do what we call a wood shake rip. Wood shake is the type of decking layer used and the "rip" just means we're going to remove or rip up the old layer. Anytime we run into an older style decking layer we remove and reinstall a plywood decking layer. This is because the wood shake design along with others are outdated and are rarely used today. They are also prone to more problems.
New plywood decking layer is in!
Our guys just finished installing the new plywood decking layer and now they are installing SealoronXT Ice and Water, this protects the edges, corners, and creases of the roof and ensures a watertight roof. Before we install the rest of the underlayment we must tape all the plywood seams and around things like vents. This tape further seals the roof from the elements.
Getting ready to shingle
The sealoronXT Ice and Water is installed along with the brown underlayment. These layers act as a barrier between the plywood decking layer and the shingles and it ensures that nothing can seep into your home. It also acts as another layer of insulation!
Our team finishing up the upper roof
Our teams always work from the upper roofs to the lower roofs to ensure the finished sections are not damaged while the rest is being installed, but when we lay the shingles we need to work bottom to top so we can layer them correctly, this ensures that water runs off the roof and not through it.
Finished beautiful roof!
This is the finished roof, our team is cleaning up for the day and we are leaving a happy customer with an amazing and safe roof that is guaranteed for the next 50 years to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at it.
