The Roof Before
Here's what Kelly's roof looked like before the renovation. Click through to see the beautiful transformation!

The Teardown Begins
The crew starts things off by carefully stripping the old shingles off of the roof. Before that, large tarps are hung up around the edges of the roof to ensure that the property is fully protected and in order to make the cleanup process more efficient.

The Sheathing Is Exposed
Underneath the old shingles is a layer of plywood called the roof sheathing. This is the structural framework of the roof. Kelly had a form of sheathing called "skip sheathing." While good for lighter-weight shingles, this type of sheathing will not be strong enough to hold the heavyweight architectural shingles we will be installing today.

New Plywood Is Installed
To fix that, new, sturdy sheets of 1/2" CDX plywood are installed on top of the skip sheathing to ensure a strong foundation for the new shingles. Each sheet used is numbered for easy tracking in order to report back to the homeowner exactly how many new sheets were used.

Seams Are Taped & Underlayment Is Installed
Each sheet is further reinforced with all-weather Sealaron XT deck tape. Next, a layer of underlayment is installed. This is a thin, waterproof membrane that protects the sheathing from harmful elements like rain, wind, snow, and ice.

New Shingles Are Installed
Now it's time to install the new shingles! For his new roof, Kelly selected the ever-popular shade of Granite Black to gorgeously complement his home.

New Flashing Is Installed on Chimney
New flashing is installed around the chimney where it meets the roof. This thin metal barrier prevents water from seeping in and causing leaks and damage around this vulnerable junction.

The Roof After
Once the last details were in place and the crew made sure everything was tidy, Kelly's roof was complete!
