IKO - Dynasty's Class 3 Impact Rating
Wednesday, April 26th, 2023 by William Madelung
One of the great things about the IKO Dynasty shingle is its class leading Class 3 impact rating. In some parts of the country a Class 3 shingle can save the homeowner hundreds of dollars per year on their homeowner’s insurance premiums, and potentially help their roof survive the next hailstorm without damage. This can be a tremendous benefit to your customers in areas prone to hail, but what does it mean?

How Impact Ratings Are Assigned

In this case, the Class 3 impact rating means that the Dynasty shingle has passed the FM 4473 test protocol. In this test, ice balls of various diameters are fired into the shingle from a launcher at a speed of 71.76 mph. The rating corresponds with the size of the ice ball that the shingle can withstand without visibly cracking or breaking. Ice balls are harder and more dense than typical hail stones, so they represent “worst case” hailstones of their size. The following table shows the ratings for various size hailstones:
Class |
Ice Ball Size |
Class 1 |
1.25" |
Class 2 |
1.5' |
Class 3 |
1.75" |
Class 4 |
2" |
