The Roof Before
This is what Jim's roof looked like before the replacement. Click through to see the awesome transformation!

Before: Stained Shingles
A closer look at this section of Jim's roof shows staining on the shingles, indicating that water is not flowing off of the roof into the gutters like it should. Let's fix that~

Old Shingles Are Removed
The crew kicks things off by stripping off all of the old shingles. This exposes the plywood foundation underneath, which is called the roof decking.

Decking Is Examined
As the structural framework of the roof, the decking must be in tip-top shape. The crew carefully inspects the entire surface for any evidence of damage, like rot or mold, and removes the affected pieces.

New Decking & Underlayment Are Installed
Sturdy new sheets of CDX plywood are precisely fitted and nailed into place. Next, the crew seals up the seams of all of the plywood with all-weather deck tape. After that, a layer of underlayment is installed over the entire decking. This thin, water-resistant material protects the roof from harsh elements like wind, rain, snow, and ice.

New Shingles Are Installed
Now it's time for the exciting part - installing the new shingles! The crew installs IKO Dynasty premium-laminated architectural shingles, renowned for their durability and curb appeal. These top-tier shingles come in a variety of colors, and Jim has chosen the ever-popular Granite Black for his new roof.

SBS Roof Base Is Installed
This section of Jim's roof is low-sloping, meaning that its pitch is too gentle to have shingles installed. Instead, a specialized SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) roofing system is applied. This synthetic rubber membrane consists of two parts. The first layer, known as the "base," is similar to the underlayment that is applied to the other sections of the roof.

SBS Roof Cap Is Installed
The second layer, called the "cap," is firmly adhered over the case, completing the SBS roof.

Ridge Vent Is Installed
A vent is installed along all ridges of the roof. This vent ensures proper air circulation by allowing hot, humid air that rises from inside of the house a means to escape - preventing damaging condensation buildup.

The Roof After
After a couple of final touches and a thorough double-check - Jim's new roof is complete and looking beautiful!
