Photo Album: Moss-Free Roof Installation and Ventilation Upgrade in Shelton, CT

Alessandro in Shelton contacted the Brown Roofing team for a full roof replacement. His 17-year-old roof had developed venting issues, leading to moisture buildup that caused significant moss growth on the shingles. Project Manager Austin and his crew were ready to deliver the perfect solution! They replaced the entire sheathing with strong new plywood, added a durable water-resistant underlayment, and installed premium IKO Dynasty shingles for both durability and style. To ensure proper attic ventilation and prevent future moisture issues, a high-quality ridge vent was also installed. In this closer look at Alessandro's old roof, you can see significant moss growth between nearly all of the shingles. Moss thrives in moist conditions, and this roof has become a perfect environment for it. Time to get started on this new roof!

Old Shingles Removed

The crew kicks off the process by carefully stripping the old shingles off the roof. Heavy-duty tarps are set up around the property to protect the landscape from debris and make cleanup easier.

Sheathing Is Assessed

Beneath the shingles lies a layer of plywood, known as the roof sheathing, which serves as the roof's structural foundation. Any pieces of the decking with damage or rot are removed.

Sheathing Is Replaced

In Alessandro's case, the entire sheathing needed to be replaced. Our crew expertly installs fresh CDX plywood, ensuring a solid foundation for his new roof. Each sheet is also numbered for easy tracking throughout the process.

Seams Taped & Underlayment Applied

After all the plywood sheets are properly fitted and nailed into place, the seams are reinforced with all-weather Sealoron XT deck tape. Next, a layer of underlayment is applied to the entire sheathing. This thin, waterproof material shields the sheathing from harsh elements like rain, snow, and ice, preventing moisture infiltration.

New Shingles Are Installed

Next, it's time to install the new shingles! We stand by IKO Dynasty premium laminated shingles for their top-tier quality. Alessandro has chosen the striking shade of Monaco Red for his roof.

Ridge Vent Is Installed

At the peak of the roof, a ridge vent is installed. This vent allows moist, humid air rising from the house to escape properly, helping prevent condensation buildup.

The Roof Is Complete

After adding shingles over the ridge vent for a smooth finish and securing each roof vent with durable flashing to prevent water from seeping into joints, Alessandro's new roof is ready to go!
