Before: Buckling Shingles
Here's a closer look at John's old roof, where you can see the shingles have a wavy appearance. This is called buckling, and happens when moisture gets trapped under the shingles and warps the roof decking. Let's get the new roof on!

Old Shingles Removed & Decking Exposed
The crew begins by carefully removing all the old shingles, revealing the plywood beneath, known as the roof decking. The decking serves as the essential framework for the roof. As you can see, John's decking has suffered significant water damage, leading to rot and decay.

Bad Plywood Removed & Replaced
The crew removes all damaged sections of the decking and prepares to replace them with fresh plywood, ensuring a solid foundation for the new roof.

New Plywood Installed & Underlayment Applied
The crew numbers each new sheet of plywood for easy tracking. After ensuring they are properly fitted and securely nailed into place, the crew begins installing the underlayment. This thin, durable barrier protects the decking from future water damage caused by rain, snow, and other harsh elements. A specialized underlayment called Ice & Water Shield is applied to the edges and valleys of the roof, where water damage is more likely to occur.

New Shingles Installed
Now that the entire decking is secured with underlayment, it's time to install the new shingles! Brown Roofing trusts IKO Dynasty premium-laminated shingles for their quality and durability. These shingles come in John's chosen color of beautiful Frostone Gray.

Vents Are Flashed & Caulked
All of the vents on the roof have new flashing installed. Flashing is a thin waterproof material that prevents water from seeping into joints and vulnerable areas. After the flashing is in place, heavy-duty caulk is applied around it for added protection.

Ridge Vent Is Installed
A ridge vent is installed at the peak of the roof to ensure proper air ventilation. This allows hot, humid air rising from the attic to escape, preventing future moisture damage.

The Roof Is Complete
With a couple of final touches, like installing shingles over the ridge vent and adding flashing to the chimney, John's new roof is finished!
